the childhood best friend - and his only friend - jugram left behind, now his accidental soulmate thanks to lack of respect for other people's property. has been deflecting attempts to start a fight with him for 1000 years while secretly looking out for him. finally killed him after bazz attacked him with the intent to kill him & yhwach - the most painful decision of jugram's life. mutual romantic/sexual attraction has been simmering for the past 1k years. glad he's here, not glad he's here, resents him and is relieved to see him, has been in repressed love with him for the past millenium. it's a disaster.

designated threat. insufferable teenager. for the time being they have an unspoken agreement not to kill each other, mostly because there is no permadeath and jugram believes the war is already won and thus there is no purpose to killing him. worked together to escape prison after being assigned as cellmates, but jugram harbors no more goodwill after that than he did before. knows he's half-quincy, still views him as the other (and a human).

another enemy combatant, one jugram holds in less regard than he does the shinigami. attacked him while they were both trying to escape from the prison and got a few good blows in before guards intervened. jugram hinges on viewing him as (figuratively) subhuman, somewhere between a wild animal and a person.

After more than one thousand years, Jugram Haschwalth dies.

He had always expected blankness, the vast expanse of nonexistence when his soul returned to Yhwach's—not whatever this is. The fact of the matter is that he's still conscious, physically healed of the wounds that ended him, in a place where nothing living seems to grow. There are dead bodies here, rotting with their limbs bent at unnatural angles; lava periodically erupts from boils in the hard earth. Some sort of massive salamander roves around the place in small groups, and judging by the wide berth the people who seem more comfortable in their surroundings give them, they're probably aggressive or poison to the touch or both.

It's not a pleasant environment, but His Majesty was gracious in allowing him to remain alive after his death, after Jugram failed him so egregiously. (Such is the only possible explanation for this turn of events, as far as he is concerned.)∎

Jugram's shadow manifests similarly to his shifts in personality when he wears the Mask of the Ruler in canon: malicious and smug, wrathful, condescending. His shadow also lacks some of the emotional stability and stable countenance his true self has, and is quickly driven to outbursts.

Abilities:
—Soul Distribution/Power Amplification: Jugram was the first Quincy born in 200 years to have the ability to impart his power unto others and enhance their abilities.
—The Balance: Jugram's primary ability allows him to redistribute misfortune (such as being wounded or hit in battle) to those that have experienced good fortune (such as landing a hit, winning a battle, etc), effectively reversing wounds. He also carries a "Freund Schilde" that absorbs all misfortune (such as wounds) that would happen to him. —Hirenkyaku Jugram can gather reishi under his feet to stand in midair or move at high speeds; he is so talented at this that he can move faster than can be seen by the eye when making attacks.
—Reishi Gathering: Like all of his kind, Jugram can absorb spiritual energy from his surroundings and use it to his advantage; he is able to do this so gradually as to be imperceptible when he chooses to do so with stealth.
—Reikaku (Spiritual Pressure Perception): Jugram, like all spiritual beings, can sense an individual soul's reiatsu (spiritual pressure) and determine their status (alive, dead, wounded), how powerful they are, and where they are in space, making it virtually impossible to sneak up on him. It's a sixth sense that falls somewhere between a dog's ability to identify and locate individuals by sense of smell and the electroperception/magnetoperception seen in some fish.
—Blut: Like all Quincies, Jugram can channel reishi into his blood vessels themselves to dramatically amplify his attack (blut arterie) and defense (blut vene) abilities, though the two cannot be used simultaneously.
—Swordsmanship: Jugram is, even without his supernatural abilities, a master swordsman. He carries a broadsword which he has used for several hundreds of years, and many of his attacks do not seem to use his Quincy abilities at all; early in the war, he effortlessly slices Ichigo Kurosaki's zanpakutou in half despite the other's immense and heretofore unrivaled power.
—Fast Reflexes: Shown to be able to catch an arrow midflight.
—Language Fluency: Canonically fluent in Japanese, likely able to at least read Ancient Hebrew given that he comes from a society that used the Hebrew tetragrammaton to name their god.

♰ SUITABILITY
Strengths:
—Jugram is highly intelligent and very observant; in canon he usually very quickly determines how things work and accurately detects and avoids traps as well as discerning the true motives of those around him. He's liable to pick up on the detectable mechanisms underlying events and strange happenings as well as the rules and patterns that underlie life in Stygia pretty easily.
—He's also incredibly levelheaded. His ex best friend has been goading him into fights, even firing at him, for hundreds of years by this point, and not once has he risen to the challenge no matter what emotionally provocative speech is thrown his way. When the rug is pulled out from under him and a new successor is announced (to the shock and anger of his subordinates), he simply accepts it as the way things are without any complaint. This unflappable adaptability and ability to calmly assess situations that are normally very distressing is liable to help him adjust to life in Nightfell quicker than most, at least where the horror elements are involved.
—Jugram can be assumed to be a very competent leader—for the 900 years Yhwach was in hibernation, he was the highest ranking member of the Wandenreich, overseeing the entirety of the Quincies' army, carrying all of the tasks normally held by a man seen as a living god, and effectively being the leader of his country as well. In situations in which a leader is needed in distressing times, he has a calming, steady presence and is the type of person who emanates authority.
Weaknesses:
—Jugram represses his own feelings and deprioritizes friendships and interpersonal bonds to his own detriment. In the current timeline, he's never shown to have any friends, and is generally reserved and formal even around his assistant, who sees him daily. When Uryuu Ishida announces that he's turning on Yhwach to rescue his friends, Jugram is baffled because they—to his eyes—offer Uryuu nothing but companionship. When he dies, he dies regretting not making amends with his one friend. This is going to be a substantial struggle for him to overcome in an environment where he needs to bond with other people, especially where the soulmates thing is concerned.
—Though he is a talented leader, Jugram is also at his very nature a follower—he's spent his life worshiping a man as a living god, and before that, he followed along with his former best friend and looked to him for guidance. Now that the link between both has been severed and he has nobody to look to and nobody to command, he's going to have to truly think for himself and make decisions based on what he wants, not any sense of duty or responsibility.
Fears: Jugram fears loss—of those he worships and of his ethnic group; much of this is undoubtedly colored by the fact that he survived an attempt by the shinigami to completely exterminate the Quincies. Ultimately he even undermines his god himself to ensure that at least a handful of members of his culture survive. In general he manages these fears by taking concrete action to ensure that the worst case scenario doesn't happen.
Desires: Jugram looks for guidance, meaning, and a sense of security as basic emotional needs.
Regrets: He doesn't have any consciously recognized regrets yet, but it feels relevant to mention that at the time of his death Jugram regrets turning on his best friend, Bazz-B, and not prioritizing friends as opposed to gaining power and being close to the man he sees as the lord. Depending on how events unfold in Nightfell, this may well end up coming to the fore.

AGE. 1,010 - b. 995 CE. He stopped aging in his mid thirties.
SPECIES. Echt (pure) Quincy.
ORIENTATION. Gay.

CANONPOINT. Just before his battle with Uryuu, once Bazz-B has been killed and he's had the vision of the future that tells him how the war will end.

PHYSICAL. Very slim but toned; 6'3". Fine, pale flaxen blond hair that comes down to his lower back; ice blue eyes shaded by long blond lashes; thin, arched brows. Minimal facial expressiveness. Clear, baritone voice and upright posture.

LINGUISTIC. Jugram speaks German as a first language and is shown to be fluent in Japanese by canon; he's been around long enough to erase any trace of an accent. I write him as able to at least read Hebrew, given that Yhwach is from the same society as himself and his name is derived from the tetragrammaton (formed of the Hebrew consonants YHWH). Though he speaks Japanese when it's the only common language available to him, conversations in Japanese are going to have the baggage of being the language of a historic oppressor, and in the case of characters who are old enough (in the hundreds of years) to have learned most languages, he'll default to German.

WARNINGS. Jugram is a quincy, a type of spiritual being and a culture that was mass-murdered by the Shinigami after respective leadership of each group failed to meet an agreement regarding overhunting of monsters known as hollows despite the world coming closer and closer to disaster. Being that he was alive and fled to escape the genocide - and the fact that the murders are the implied reason that the members of the army he presides over have agreed to fight - it may come up in threads, and there will be an undercurrent of ethnic tension to be expected in threads with Shinigami. He is shown to go as far as to undermine the will of the man he worships as a living god to ensure the survival of at least some other quincies; it's something that's very important to him.

Kubo regrettably makes heavy use of Nazi imagery and themes in how he handles the portrayal of the Quincies, and some of the uniform choices are visible in Jugram's icons; the fact that he's from a very cultish, highly militarized society informs much of his behavior even in unrelated situations. Jugram is also heavily implied to have grown up in a physically and possibly sexually abusive household in canon; I agree with the general consensus that Kubo is implying both. However, he's had hundreds of years to process these events and his feelings on them, so they're very unlikely to come up.

OFFENSIVE SUBJECTS/TRIGGERS. I'd like to avoid writing/referencing/discussing relationships with a large age gap or an uneven power dynamic, especially Jugram/Yhwach. I'm squeamish about graphic finger-/toenail and eye injuries and would prefer to avoid including them in threads.

PHYSICAL AFFECTION. Jugram's not too keen on being touched; physical affection is something that would definitely need to be worked up to.

FIGHTING & INJURING. Fighting is fine by me; though it'd be very hard to land a hit on him that he wouldn't immediately transfer to the person who inflicted it, I'm cool with him getting injured in a thread (though discussion will probably be necessary beforehand so we can work out how it happened).

KILLING. No.

TELEPATHY/EMPATHY/FORCE READING. With discussion.

SHIPPING. Jugram is largely disinterested in romantic attachment, but he's capable of attraction and does have very messy, very confusing lingering feelings re: Bazz-B. There are a few ships for him that I absolutely will not write; see below.

SMUT. It's possible, but it'd take a lot to work up to the point of sexual intimacy for him. Sexual contact isn't triggering for Jugram, but there's still a heightened risk of csa mentions coming to the fore by virtue of abuse having been his only sexual contact.
